THE PUSH
What if all we ever needed was a PUSH?
Let me share this quick backstory.
Earlier this year, I needed to take a break from extracurricular activities to focus on my professional examinations.
One that took a lot from me and taught me a lot as well. It was my first ever professional exam in medical school and I have been gisted that it was no child’s play.
Of course, there is time for everything and I knew that I had to set my priorities right. I had to let go of my “love” - writing and creating beautiful pieces for a while.
I told myself, “Don’t worry, you would be done in no time and you would have enough time to do other things.
Don’t get me wrong ; I love my course and my chosen path despite my daily rants and countless “God abeg”. Lol! But I’m allowed to love more than a thing right?
God has deposited so much in us to limit ourselves. So, my dear , you are allowed to study your law and still have crazy passion for music!!
Life is not meant to be monotonous - do you get?
So, live fully and don’t tip- toe through life.
Walk confidently into your purpose and do things that makes you really happy and fulfilled.
Yeah, that’s by the way.
So, back to my story. I consoled myself while writing my final piece last year telling myself it was just a matter of time.
(You can check out "Big win, small wins")
But guess what ?
“Soon” turned into “quite a long time” and almost felt like it was too late to push through again. I had tons of excuses of why I should wait till the next day or maybe forever.
Procrastination is not only a thief of time but also a thief of peace. The feeling of guilt associated with “I could have done it then” makes one feel unproductive and frustrated.
Excuses are limitations of growth.
And the truth is excuses are lies we feed the mind with in a bid to remain in our comfort zone.
Then one day, I stumbled on a story that seemed to be the PUSH I needed.
In this story, there was a man who had been lamed for over thirty eight years. To get healed, he needed help to get into a pool of water that was believed to heal people. At a certain hour, the pool of water get disturbed and only those who got into the pool got healed before it settles again.
But the issue is this - there were also similar people in that situation and only one person could get healed per day. Whenever the hour comes and this particular lame man makes an attempt, he gets knocked down by others and that has been the cycle for years. Whew!!
On a faithful day, this man had a special visitor while he still remained in the trenches, begging for alms. This special visitor asked him a life changing question, “Would you like to get well?”
The sick man responded “I can’t, sir. For I have no one to put me into the pool when the water bubbles up. Someone else always gets there ahead of me”.
Hold on for a sec - this statement got me thinking for a while and to be honest, I was quite pissed off. But then it dawned on me that was probably the state of my mindset then and maybe yours before you came across this piece.
“I can’t do it” ,
“I don’t think I deserve this opportunity”,
“Oh, I think I am quite satisfied with my current state”,
“Someone else is better than me”,
“I am not good enough” etc.
And it becomes a cycle that keeps you stuck.
Excuses squeezes life out of your potentials. If there are thousands of reasons or excuses for something to fail, fight for the one reason why it should work out.
Our excuses might be valid or justifiable just like that of the lame man but they can’t take us far in life. Excusez moi ?
Yes, you - I hope we get to do better henceforth.
Was that the end of the story?
Of course not and here is the beautiful part of the story.
As though he had not heard the lame man’s excuse, the special visitor looked at him and said, “Stand up, pick up your mat, and walk!”
Trust me when I say, these words felt like they were spoken to me directly. Precise instructions that came alive instantly and guess what, the lame man did rose and walked!!
To me, it felt like someone was telling me to wake up from my slumber or comfort zone, pick up my pen and start writing again. To you, it might mean, “pick up that pending or abandoned project, course, business idea and start working on it.”
The special visitor gave the lame man who had lost all hope a push - a reason to live again.
Maybe, just maybe, that is what we all need at some point in our lives when all hope is lost or when it seems like things are not going as planned or when there are millions of excuses to give up.
Beyond just reading this piece, I sincerely hope you get the push and drive you need to step up your games and reach for the stars.
Maybe you skipped this part- "Push yourself because no one else is going to do it for you"
What a long read.
